“Bhakti yoga teaches us how to have a romance with life itself.”
- Sean Johnson
What is Bhakti Yoga?
Bhakti yoga is referred to as the yoga of love and devotion. In the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient spiritual epic, bhakti is one of the three paths to enlightenment: jnana = path of knowledge, karma = path of action, & bhakti = path of love.
Traditionally, each practice is devoted to a guru or deity/deities as a pathway to unconditional love. In modern practice, bhakti has taken a more modern and down-to-earth approach. The ancient hindu deities are interpreted as various aspects of the Self and therefore, each practice is devoted to a specific part of ourselves in order to enter into that “romance” with all the unique parts of who we are and the lives we live.
Each practice is as varying as the people who practice it; from strong, energizing, solar flows to intentional, grounding, lunar movement and everything in between. The practice is dependent on that part of us which we choose to devote ourselves to (and, in essence, to love).
Most notably, bhakti yoga is often accompanied by the recitation of mantra, in the form of a meditative repetition or a kirtan-style chant. Bhakti yoga inspires compassionate awareness through movement, meditation, mantra & pranayama.
What can I expect from a masterclass?
In this Bhakti masterclass, we will begin and end the class with a mantra as a way of setting an intention for both the class as well as life off the mat. We will move through a carefully crafted asana practice which mirrors the intention of the mantra in which Lynn will guide you using the ancient stories of the specific deity the class will be devoted to. This masterclass will be both strong and soft, creative and focused, and will of course, be accompanied by the beautiful sounds of the harmonium.
