“Bhakti yoga teaches us how to have a romance with life itself.”

- Sean Johnson

Bhakti yoga is referred to as the yoga of love and devotion.

In the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient spiritual epic, bhakti is one of the three paths to enlightenment: jnana = path of knowledge, karma = path of action, & bhakti = path of love. Traditionally, each practice is devoted to a guru or deity/deities as a pathway to unconditional love.

As David Frawley, the director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies, calls Bhakti, “it is the sweetest of the yoga approaches...as one concentrates one’s mind, emotions, and senses on the ‘Divine’ in order to merge into the reality of divine love” (Yoga: The Greater Tradition, 2008).

In practice, Bhakti has taken a more modern and down-to-earth approach. The ancient Hindu deities are interpreted as various aspects of the Self and therefore, each practice is devoted to a specific part of ourselves in order to enter into that “romance” with all the unique parts of who we are and the lives we live.

Each practice is as varying as the people who practice it; from strong, energizing, solar flows to intentional, grounding, lunar movement and everything in between. The practice is dependent on that part of us which we choose to devote ourselves to (and, in essence, to love). Most notably, Bhakti yoga is often accompanied by the recitation of mantra, in the form of a meditative repetition or a kirtan-style chant.

Bhakti yoga inspires compassionate awareness through movement, meditation, mantra & pranayama.
